Blessing of the Fleet and Photo Day - May 17
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 23 April 2008
This year we have the pleasure of having The Reverend Kevin Wittmayer, Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, perform our blessing. The Blessing of the Fleet will begin at 11:30am on Saturday, May 17, 2008. After the blessing, we will grill hamburgers with all the trimmings. (Please let Joe Mraz know how many people are in your party). After the picnic, remember to bring your camera. As we cruise the lake, we all can take pictures of each other's boats so we can swap these once-in-a-lifetime photos of our boats and crew.

Fall Race Schedule Released
Written by Administrator
Monday, 21 April 2008
The Fall Race Schedule has been set:

The Long Race - September 20, 2008 - We will be using the traditional long course.

Bratwurst Regatta - October 11, 2008 - We will hold 3 races that day followed by bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad, and your favorite cold beer afterwards

The Great Race - November 8, 2008 - We will be using a new modified long course.

This will be an exciting time for all racers with a total of five races over a seven-week period.  Having this schedule in the fall will give everyone new and old who are interested in racing time to get out and practice a bit, learn some tricks from regular racers, and become better sailors.  Those interested in racing and have not had much experience, please contact Joe Mraz for any questions you may have.

History of Blessing of the Fleet
Written by Joe Mraz

Blessing of the Fleet (Brief History): The "Blessing of the Fleet" is a centuries-old tradition originating in southern European fishing communities.  A blessing from the local priest was meant to ensure a bountiful and safe season.  During the springtime of the year all over the world from fishing villages to large cities, fishermen and yachtsmen conduct an annual blessing of their boats and the men and women who work and sail in them.  In some localities, it is a several day event.

No sport or recreation is more filled with traditions and lore than yachting. Ever since its beginnings in Europe during the reign of Charles II, the monarch who is generally credited with ordering the first yacht strictly for pleasure (though many will argue that Cleopatra was the first yacht owner), ceremony, if not pomp, has been part and parcel of nautical behavior. Yachtsmen as a group are probably more religious than most sporting types, perhaps for the reason that the sea breeds fear and respect for the Almighty. Sailors are also usually superstitious, which in turn has led to many of the rituals and practices connected with the sport.

The Blessing of the Fleet by the Longview Yacht Club is one of these rituals, which has been held for 30 years now. Over the years, many blessings have been performed providing reflection, prayer and fellowship for all.
